This is the Stalingrad Madonna, as sketched by Lt Dr Karl Reuber on the back of a captured Russian map in late 1942. It is said that the half starved scarecrows from the dying army who saw the image were transfixed by it.
The work was flown out of Stalingrad on one of the final flights and today the 3' x 4' icon hangs in the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin. Identical copies are to be found at the cathedrals in Coventry and Volgograd.
A very merry Christmas goes out to all my readers, especially those who are far from home on this day.
