Western journalists view the destruction in Tskhinvali
As a South Ossetian militiaman stands on front of a wrecked Georgian tank in the centre of Tskhinvali, the scale of the destruction is only now becoming fully clear.
The small capital city has not been totally destroyed as earlier reports indicated. However there are "patches of terrible destruction", according to the Guardian, whose journalists were amongst the first westerners allowed into Tskhinvali after the fighting stopped.
As this blog reported on Sunday, the South Ossetian militia never abandoned their capital and where still holding their lines when the Russians arrived to support them and help to liberate the city from the Georgian invaders.
