America is flying home Georgian troops from Iraq
The 2,000 Georgian troops who were serving as part of the occupation force in Iraq are now being flown home, said American General David Petraeus. The report came out today and suggests that the operation was ongoing at the time that it was made, so the flights from Baghdad most likely began on Saturday. It is probable that by now most of them will have reached their destination.
So Georgia has some new troops to feed into the grinding machine if she wishes. They might be deployed as part of the final defence of Tblisi, if the Russians decide to go that far, but it is more likely that they will be needed to defend President Mikheil Saakashvili, when his people wake up to the reality of the crushing defeat that his policies have led them to.
